Before comparing fees or SDKs, anyone picking a payment gateway for mobile app developers needs to know whether Apple and Google will allow it for what the app sells. Digital unlocks must use in-app purchase, while physical goods and real-world services must use another checkout. This comparison looks at three gateways for that second group, on fees, integration effort and signup requirements.
Quick answer: PayMeGate leads this comparison for apps selling physical goods, real-world services or web checkouts: a 1% platform fee plus provider fees, no monthly fees, a hosted checkout created from your server, and payouts in USDC, USDT, ETH or POL to your own wallet. BTCPay Server is the free self-hosted choice for Bitcoin-only apps, and OxaPay fits crypto merchants registered outside the United States, since its terms exclude US businesses.
Editorial disclosure
This comparison was prepared with input from PayMeGate, which sells payment processing services, and we may have a commercial relationship with services listed here. | #3 | OxaPay | Crypto invoices and payment links for non-US merchants | From 0.4%; 1.5% for invoices and links | None stated | Not on pages we read | No KYC wording found; US-registered businesses excluded |
Before you add payment gateways: app store rules for in app payments
Before you add a gateway to a mobile application, check what you sell, because apps with mixed business models can need both:
- Digital content or features (Apple 3.1.1). If a purchase unlocks features or functionality inside your app, such as subscriptions, game currencies or premium content, Apple requires in-app purchase. Apps may not use their own mechanisms, and Apple's guideline names cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency wallets among them.
- Physical goods and real-world services (Apple 3.1.3(e)). If people buy goods or services consumed outside the app, you must use purchase methods other than in-app purchase, such as Apple Pay or traditional card entry. Person-to-person real-time services such as tutoring may also use other methods.
- United States storefront. Apple's current guidelines say apps on the US storefront do not need a special entitlement to include buttons, external links or other calls to action pointing to other ways to buy.
- Google Play. Digital in-app purchases must use Google Play's billing system, and Play billing must not be used for physical goods. In some markets Google offers alternative billing programmes developers can enrol in.
So a third-party payment gateway is the right tool for marketplace, delivery, booking, ticketing and e-commerce apps, B2B invoices, and US-storefront apps that link out to a web checkout. It is not a way around in-app purchase for digital unlocks.
What "no-KYC" means: which payment details and documents you provide
Three different checks get mixed up:
- Merchant KYC: identity documents from you, the founder. PayMeGate's signup does not request ID or business-document uploads.
- KYB (know your business): company registration, ownership and website review. Many card processors run this before they open a merchant account for you.
- Customer KYC: checks on the person paying. With PayMeGate, independent providers may ask customers for instant ID verification by phone camera, depending on the payment method and amount.
"No-KYC" therefore means a faster gateway account for you, not anonymous payments for your users. PayMeGate's guide to no-KYC payment gateways explains the difference in more detail.
How we chose the best payment gateway to accept payments in apps
We compared payment gateway providers on what matters to a small app team:
- API and webhooks: detailed documentation, a REST API, server-created orders and verified payment callbacks.
- Mobile payments fit: a hosted payment page that works in an in-app browser, so card data never touches your app.
- Total cost: transaction fee, monthly fees, setup fees, minimums and transparent pricing.
- Payment methods: debit card and credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfers and crypto.
- Signup and compliance: what the gateway account requires, and which businesses it prohibits.
- Settlement: where the money lands and how fast.
1. PayMeGate: best payment gateway for a mobile app selling goods and services
PayMeGate is payment software that routes each order to independent payment providers. Customers pay by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, SEPA or local bank transfers, or crypto, and you receive supported settlement in USDC, USDT, ETH or POL in wallets you configure.
PayMeGate fees
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Platform fee | From 1%, configurable per merchant |
| Provider, exchange or network fee | Set by the underlying provider or blockchain |
| Minimum order | $1 to $30, depending on the provider selected |
| Monthly fees | None |
| Setup fees | None |
| Rolling reserves | None |
See the PayMeGate pricing page for the current breakdown.
Key features
- REST API:
POST /v1/orderscreates an unpaid order and returns acheckoutUrlyou share with the customer. AbackUrlsends them to a public HTTPS destination after checkout, and anexternalIdlets you look up orders by your own ID. - Webhooks: a verified payment callback marks the order paid and triggers your merchant webhook. Structured JSON metadata, such as a cart or user ID, comes back unchanged.
- Server-side keys: requests use a merchant API key in an
X-API-Keyheader, and PayMeGate's docs say never to expose merchant keys in browser code. The same rule applies to your app binary. - No-code options: payment links you can send by chat or email, plus WooCommerce, WHMCS, PrestaShop and OpenCart plugins for a web store behind your app.
- Crypto checkout: BTC, ETH, USDC, USDT, SOL and more, with a temporary receiving address per checkout.
Best for
Delivery, marketplace, booking and e-commerce apps, apps that collect payment on the web, and teams declined by Stripe or PayPal who want card payments without uploading documents.
Things to consider
PayMeGate does not describe a native iOS or Android SDK, so you open its hosted checkout in an in-app browser. Its pages do not describe stored-card recurring billing, so apps that need recurring payments or automated billing must create a new order each period. Settlement is in crypto to a self-custodial wallet, so you need an exchange or off-ramp to reach a bank account. Fake shops, adult content, gambling, intoxicating substances, pirated content and criminal activity are prohibited, and each provider applies its own rules.
2. BTCPay Server: free, open-source Bitcoin payment gateway
BTCPay Server describes itself as a self-hosted, open-source cryptocurrency payment processor with 0% fees and no third party. You run it on a cloud server or your own hardware, or use an existing host.
BTCPay Server costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Platform fee | 0% |
| Hosting | Your own server or a third-party host |
| Network fees | Bitcoin on-chain fees; Lightning Network supported |
Key features
- Greenfield API (v1) for invoices, stores and webhooks
- Built-in apps for point of sale (useful for in store payments), payment requests and crowdfunding
- Plugins for WooCommerce and other platforms
- Its site cites Bitcoin People, which built a mobile app on BTCPay's API for 270 merchants
Best for
Developers who want a free payment gateway API, full custody and no company account at all.
Things to consider
No debit card checkout, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and you run the infrastructure, updates and backups yourself. Customers must hold bitcoin.
3. OxaPay: crypto invoices and payment links
OxaPay is a crypto payment gateway with an API, plugins and no-code payment links.
OxaPay fees
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Payment link, invoice or donation | 1.5% per transaction |
| White label | 2% per transaction |
| Static address | 2% + fixed fee per transaction |
| Negotiated rate | Can be reduced to 0.4%, via an account manager |
Key features
- REST API with webhook callbacks for every payment status and auto-withdrawals
- Plugins for WooCommerce, WHMCS, Magento 2, OpenCart, WISECP and ClientExec
- Payment links shareable by Telegram, SMS, email or chat, and a Telegram wallet
Best for
Non-US app businesses that only need crypto and want low processing fees.
Things to consider
Its terms require that your business is not registered in the United States, its territories, or several sanctioned or restricted countries, so most US developers cannot use it. We found no card payment support or KYC wording on the pages we read, and its terms prohibit unlawful businesses.
Comparison of payment gateway providers for apps
| Feature | PayMeGate | BTCPay Server | OxaPay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee on a $50 order | $0.50 + provider fee | $0 + network fee | $0.75 (invoice) |
| Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay | Yes | No | Not found |
| Hosted payment page | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Native mobile SDK | Not described | Not described | Not described |
| Webhooks | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Settlement | USDC, USDT, ETH, POL to your wallet | Bitcoin to your wallet | Crypto to OxaPay balance or auto-withdrawal |
| US merchants | Accepted | Self-hosted, no restriction | Excluded |
Payment options mobile shoppers expect
Mobile shoppers want the payment options they already use on their mobile devices: digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, plus debit card and credit card entry. Users abroad may prefer local payment methods such as SEPA transfers in Europe, and US users may ask for ACH direct debit, which none of the three gateways here lists. PayMeGate covers cards, wallets, SEPA and local bank transfers through its providers, and accepts multiple currencies on the crypto side. Online vendors that also sell in person can use BTCPay's point-of-sale app for in person payments in bitcoin. A short, familiar payment experience matters more on a phone than on desktop, so test the full flow on small screens before launch.
Fees, settlement and the real cost of mobile payments
Most payment gateways charge a percentage transaction fee. Roundups in the search results quote Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30, Braintree at 2.59% + $0.49 and PayPal at 3.49% + $0.49 for card payments. On a $20 order, 2.9% + $0.30 is $0.88; PayMeGate's 1% platform fee is $0.20 before the provider's own fee, which varies by method, so compare the total at checkout rather than the headline rate.
Also budget for chargeback fees on card methods, currency conversion for international payments, and network fees on crypto. Some processors add PCI compliance fees, monthly minimums or a hidden fee on international transactions, which usually cost more than domestic transactions. Transparent pricing matters more as payment volume grows: at a transaction volume of $10,000 a month, one percentage point is $100. PayMeGate's settlement starts after payment confirmation, but timing depends on the provider, customer steps and blockchain confirmations.
Payment gateway integration: how to integrate a payment gateway in a mobile app
The safe pattern for a hosted gateway looks the same on iOS, Android, React Native or Flutter.
Set up your gateway account and backend
- Set up your gateway account and create a live API key. Store it only on your backend.
- Your app calls your backend with the cart or booking ID.
- Your backend creates the order (with PayMeGate,
POST /v1/orders) and returns the checkout URL. - Open the checkout in SFSafariViewController on iOS or Chrome Custom Tabs on Android, not a hidden WebView, so users see the payment page address.
- Return to the app through the
backUrl, using a universal link or Android App Link on your HTTPS domain. - Trust only the webhook: mark the order paid when your server receives the verified payment callback, then update the app so users see their successful payments.
- Reconcile and manage payments with order lookups by external ID and the merchant dashboard; watching payment performance and customer behavior at checkout shows where users drop off.
Embedded finance, native SDKs or hosted payment pages?
Because card details are entered on the provider's hosted page, your app never handles payment data, which keeps PCI DSS compliance scope small and avoids most PCI compliance work. Embedded finance platforms and native SDKs keep the customer interface inside the app with a user friendly interface, one-tap tokenized checkout and built-in fraud protection, but they usually come with full underwriting.
Payment gateway vs merchant account vs PSP
A payment gateway captures payment details and passes them on. A payment processor moves money between banks and card networks for electronic payments. A payment service provider bundles both, often with a merchant account and its own payment services. PayMeGate is software that routes orders to independent providers who process the payments, which is why provider checks and dispute rules can differ by method. PayMeGate's payment gateway guide covers the models in more depth.
Risks and compliance
- AML stays with you. A gateway that skips merchant documents does not remove your own anti-money-laundering, consumer-protection or licensing duties.
- Card network rules. Providers apply Visa and Mastercard rules on prohibited goods, and can refuse or reverse payments.
- Chargebacks. Direct on-chain payments are final after confirmation; card and wallet methods follow each provider's dispute rules. Keep delivery evidence.
- Sanctions. Check that your users and your own jurisdiction are not restricted; OxaPay's terms list several excluded countries.
- Tax. Crypto you receive is income. In the US, brokers report digital asset sales on Form 1099-DA, gross proceeds from 2025 and basis for certain assets from 2026, and you must report all digital asset income whether or not you receive a form.
- App store policy. Using an outside gateway for digital unlocks outside the rules above can get an app rejected.
For high-risk business models, read each provider's acceptable-use terms before you build.
Frequently asked questions
How to integrate a payment gateway in a mobile app?
Create orders on your server, open the hosted checkout in an in-app browser, return users with a universal link or App Link, and confirm payment from the webhook rather than the app. Never ship API keys inside the app.
What is the best crypto payment gateway?
For card-to-crypto checkout with no document uploads, PayMeGate. For free, self-hosted Bitcoin, BTCPay Server. For low-fee crypto invoices outside the US, OxaPay. See PayMeGate's crypto payment gateway overview.
What is the best crypto payment gateway for websites?
The same three work on an online store through payment links, plugins or the API; PayMeGate also takes cards. If your store runs on Shopify, Shopify Payments may be simpler for card payment processing.
Is there a free payment gateway API available for developers?
BTCPay Server is free and open source with its Greenfield API, though you pay for hosting and network fees. PayMeGate has no monthly fees and charges only when you get paid.
How to pay for an in-app purchase?
For digital items, the app store handles it: you confirm with Face ID, your Apple ID payment method or Google Play balance. Physical goods and services use the merchant's own checkout.
Can I use GPay in iOS?
Apple Pay is the built-in wallet on iPhone. Google Pay may appear on some web checkouts in a browser, but iOS apps selling physical goods normally offer Apple Pay or card entry.
Is Adyen a payment gateway?
Yes. Adyen combines a gateway, processing and acquiring in one platform, and roundups cite 99.999% historical uptime. It suits large merchants that pass full underwriting.
Can the IRS see your crypto wallet?
Public blockchains are visible to anyone, and US brokers now report digital asset sales to the IRS on Form 1099-DA. You must report crypto income either way.
Can I build my own payment gateway?
You can, but handling card data directly brings full PCI DSS compliance, acquirer contracts and fraud tooling. Most app teams use a hosted gateway instead.
What are the downsides of mobile payments?
App store fees and rules, redirects that can lower conversion, device and wallet fragmentation, and fraud. A hosted checkout reduces data risk but adds a step.
Final verdict
For apps that sell real-world goods or services, or collect payment on the web, PayMeGate offers the fastest start in this group: card and crypto checkout at a 1% platform fee plus provider fees, no monthly fees or reserves, an order API with webhooks and no document uploads at signup. BTCPay Server is the better fit for a free, fully self-hosted Bitcoin setup, and OxaPay is only an option for businesses registered outside the United States.
